Performance Grading Index 2020 Released: Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ has released the Performance Grading Index 2020 or PGI 2019-20, which grades States and Union Territories on a set of 70 parameters to assess and catlyse transformational change in the field of education. According to the report released for 2029-20 academic calendar, a total of 5 states and union territories i.e. Punjab, Chandigarh, Tamil Nadu, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Kerala have been placed in the the highest grade (Grade A++) for 2019-20.

PGI 2019-20 Report – Key Highlights

There is good news on various front as per the data shared in the PGI 2019-20 Report. As compared to last year, majority of states have shown improvement across various parameters. For the first time, 5 states have attained Level II score of 901-950 which is Grade A or 1++. Ladakh (which is graded for the first time) is placed in Grade VII) and Meghalaya which is Grade VI have been graded in 601-650. The overall standing of the different grades and scores for various states and UTs are listed in the table below:

Level VI (701 – 750) Grade III Assam, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram

Level VII (651 – 700) Grade IV Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Nagaland

Level VIII (601 – 650) Grade V Meghalaya

Level XI (551 – 600) Grade VI Nil

Level X (0 – 550) Grade VII Ladakh

About Performance Grading Index 2020

The Performance Grading Index was first published in the 2019 for the years 2017-18. The index was developed as a concept that aims to assess evaluate multi-pronged interventions which can help various states and administrations to achieve their desired goals in the field of Education. The report also works as a credible source of information for other states to understand the best practices followed by top performing states and UTs. The end goal of releasing the index is to point out areas of strengths as well as concerns and decode learning gaps and launch initiatives to effectively bridge them.
